Valentine's Vase Sleeve

I did the deed. I took down my Christmas decorations. (Why is it always so much more fun putting them up...??) It took me an entire night, and I am still finding bits and pieces of Christmas around the house, but it is mostly done. And suddenly it looks so bare around here! Time for Valentine's Day decor..........
but I am basically starting from scratch this year. Unlike Christmas, where I have bins and bins of decorations, I have hardly anything for V-day! Ruh-roh!! So... I did what I do best: I raided the house. I opened up every drawer, closet, cupboard, and bin...and pulled out anything I might be able to rope into Valentine's Day decor. First up? Vases, old tights & matchless socks.

Take a look at these poor tights I pulled out of the drawer in the girls' room. My girls are hard on tights. Maybe it has something to do with their love of playing "puppy"...... (although I have to admit, as long as they are playing it on their own and not asking me to join in, I let 'em at it - ruined tights and all :)

I just cut off the worn feet and chopped the legs into sleeves of various lengths (depending on the height of your vase). Then I found our bucket of matchless socks and pulled out this cute little red one. And what do you know...? It comes pre-folded for cutting out hearts!  :)

I used Aleene's No-Sew Fabric Glue to attach the hearts to the sleeves:

And voila!

Almost embarrassingly easy...I know. But sometimes the easiest things are best! It's a great way to recycle old tights and dress up a simple vase, and what I love most is the fact that you can change the sleeve to match the season! (No more buying vases in every color...where are you supposed to store all those, anyway??)

Isn't it sweet?

Not to worry, this little vase has some friends and is establishing a little life for itself here at our Lemon Tree Dwelling. More on that soon...but for now, I'd just like to say:

Valentine's Day, I'm glad you're (almost) here!

Thanks for taking a peek inside my Lemon Tree Dwelling!
I hope you feel right at home :)

  4. Oh my goodness. This is seriously too clever and THE perfect thing to do with all of those destroyed tights that you hate to toss considering the short amount of time they last. It is so simple and yet I never would have thought of this!! Awesome idea and thanks so much for sharing-I will definitely be following suit!!

  8. What a fun idea! I love that it makes it sorta temporary. I usually only decorate for Christmas and Halloween and Thanksgiving, but this way I could decorate for smaller holidays and change it out more often!

    1. Hi Jessi, thanks for your comment! That's what I love about it too...instead of buying and storing for each holiday, you can easily switch it up! :)

  12. I am in LOVE with this idea!!! I love to decorate for the big holidays like Halloween and Christmas, but for all the smaller holidays I don't like to do much. Not because I don't like to celebrate or be festive, because I do, but I just don't want more storage containers filled with holiday decor! The part I love about this the most is that I don't have to put away my everyday things to feature holiday decor....I can now "dress up" my everyday decor to match the holiday and on top of that, these cute little vase sleeves aren't going to break my storage closet!!

SO cute, SO smart, thank you SO much!!

  13. What a great idea! It is always fun making things using items you find laying around the house. Perfect for when I get an urge to work on a craft, but am too lazy to go to the craft store for tools. Just found your blog through the TT&J link party. I'm you're newest follower on GFC too, can't wait to read more :)

  15. You are right about how our home looks after taking down Christmas decor.... it has taken me two full days and I still need one more container for things I keep finding. Plus my husband wants me to leave his tree, santa's, deer, etc. up downstairs in his 'man cave', he says he is enjoying it still! What a sweetie! He is building a plane, hope to finish this winter to fly in the summer/spring.
I love what you came up using what you had, now I need a trip to JoAnn's for the no-sew glue and GW (goodwill) for old sweaters. Thank you, a very cute idea!
